I wanted to share a blog on what to wear for a cake smash session!
Depending on whether you are in the portrait session, there are different levels of what to wear. The best part? I offer a full client wardrobe for mom and baby. Now, the wardrobe does depend on the theme of the cake smash session. I love making everything cohesive, which only brings the colours together.
This sweet girl had a ‘Sweet One’ Session, so it was important to keep the colours pastel and cohesive, so we went with this adorable handmade outfit.
Here is another amazing example of colours. Using colour theory, I wanted him to stand out but not too much where it isn’t cohesive with the remainder of the set. I love how simple this outfit is but it also does pop against the brown backdrop.
Last but not least, I wanted to share this themed outfit. As I mentioned, I will always make sure that the outfit is cohesive, and with a space theme, I had to make sure to get an astronaut outfit! How perfect is this? I truly want to make sure your vision comes through for your baby’s cake smash.
Now, let’s chat about what you can wear as a parent! I do offer a package that has photos of parents! I always suggest that parents get this important memory with their birthday baby. This is the only time that you will have a baby this age. For the luxury set, I always do a different backdrop, and I always make sure that it is something simple that you can leave up on your walls all year.
This is an example of keeping it very simple, and this can be up on their walls all year long. I work with my clients to make sure that what they wear is cohesive with their personalities as well as the decor around their home.
Now some quick tips for if you aren’t going to be in the portraits:
- Wear clothes you don’t care about – I promise, you will have icing everywhere
- Where lighter clothing – Because you will get a bit of a workout if the baby is a mover
- Always plan to get covered in icing, even if both parents will be present. Baby will always want to crawl to the parent that isn’t trying to put them back.
Even though cake smash portraits are one of my favourite things to photograph, it is also one of those portraits that take a ton of prep work to make sure everything flows correctly. So please make sure to read everything that your Durham Region Photographer sends you, and honestly, enjoy every second of celebrating your baby’s first year.
